Beginner Guide

Dead or Alive 6 Beginner Guide: Controls, Defense, and First Practice Flow

Start with the core buttons, learn the strike-throw-hold triangle, then add the Special button and Break Gauge. This guide gives new players a clean route from controls to first-match fundamentals.

1

Learn the default buttons first

Memorize Punch, Kick, Hold, Throw, and Special before learning character-specific strings.

2

Understand the triangle system

Strikes beat throws, throws beat holds, and holds beat strikes. Winning the correct interaction deals extra damage, so the goal is not just pressing faster; it is reading what the opponent is trying to do.

3

Practice high, mid, and low defense

Standing guard blocks high and mid strikes, crouching guard blocks low strikes, and holds must match the attack height. High Hold answers high strikes, Mid Punch Hold answers mid punches, Mid Kick Hold answers mid kicks, and Low Hold answers low strikes.

4

Use the Special button for beginner tools

The Special button connects key beginner actions: sidestepping, Side Attack, Fatal Rush, Break Hold, and Break Blow. It is the fastest way to access the new DOA6 systems while learning the command list.

5

Spend Break Gauge carefully

Break Gauge fills during a fight. At 50%, use Break Hold to counter any strike height. At 100%, use Break Blow for a powerful strike through the opponent's attack.

6

Build a first combo route

Start with one safe string, one launcher, two air hits, and one knockback ender. Keep the route short until you can repeat it from both sides of the screen.

7

Use the training modes in order

Run Tutorial for system basics, Free Training for movement and defense, Command Training for each fighter's inputs, Combo Challenge for routes, and DOA Quest for practical missions and rewards.

8

Use a simple first-match checklist

Block more than you mash, throw opponents who hold too much, hold opponents who repeat obvious strikes, and save Break Hold for pressure that would otherwise trap you in stun.

Combat Mechanics

Dead or Alive 6 Combat System: Break Gauge, Fatal Rush, Holds, and Stage Hazards

Learn each system one at a time: triangle rules first, Break Gauge second, stage control third. This module breaks the combat system into short mechanics cards for quick learning.

  • A correct interaction deals increased damage.
  • Use strikes when the opponent tries to throw.
  • Use throws when the opponent relies on holds.
  • Use holds when the opponent repeats predictable strikes.

Example: After blocking a repeated string, try a throw if the opponent keeps fishing for holds.
